Government Medical College and Hospital, Nagpur inaugurated at the hands of first President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad on 27/03/1952. The college is affiliated with Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik.
The cam¬pus is stretched over an area of 196 acres. The Hospital attached to this institution has 2423 beds with updated facilities, beside Medical College and Hospital and Super specialty Hospital, the Campus incorporates Dental College, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Nursing Schools. Government Medical College (GMC), Nagpur is also known to have the largest campus in Asia. Currently, approximately 3500 patients visit hospital daily in OPD.
Department of Psychiatry, GMC, Nagpur was established in 1981. Since November 2009 Inpatient services became operable. Dr. Rajiv M. Haridas was the first Faculty appointed as Lecturer in Dept. of Psychiatry. Dr. Prashant G. Tiple is the first Professor of Department of Psychiatry, GMC, Nagpur and since 2011 heading the Department.
The department has 15 beds for male and 15 for female. Approximately 90 patients come daily in OPD. The department is first to issue certificate for ‘Autism’ in whole Maharashtra
Since 01/09/2019 it has started Drug Treatment Clinic. OPD is located at ground floor of main OPD building with special OPD No. 72, and has separate Drug Treatment Clinic (Coordinated by NDDTC AIIMS, New Delhi), in ward no. 45 at Second floor. DTC has separate dedicated staff for drug dependent patients. DTC provides treatment and counseling free of cost for Nicotine, Alcohol and Opioid and Cannabis dependent patients. Since the commencement of DTC, medications like Tab. Buprenorphine, Tab. Naltrexone, Tab. Disulfiram and Tab. Lorazepam are available free for patients.
