Department of Psychiatry has an excellent history of 45 years in providing teaching, training and research in the field of Psychiatry. With a modest beginning of specialty in psychiatry in 1956, Independent Department of Psychiatry came into existence in K. G. Medical College in 1971. Currently it is one of well-established GHPU in the country which has specialized units for child psychiatry, drug de-addiction, psycho-sexual & marital problems, stress management and anxiety disorders, psychosomatic & consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, women mental health, neuropsychiatry and community psychiatry. Treatment facilities include drug therapy, electroconvulsive therapy (Modified ECT), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), biofeedback, psychotherapy, behaviour therapy, occupational therapy, recreational therapy and music therapy. The department has its own Bio-chemical Lab., E.E.G Lab., Psychological Lab., facilities for Bio-feedback and Neuro-feedback therapy. Indoor admission facilities are available for patients of all ages, suffering from psychiatric disorders, under the expert supervision of experienced consultants. The department has 90 general beds and six private rooms. There are two male wards, one female ward and a child & adolescent ward. The department also provides round the clock emergency psychiatric services and currently around 4000 patients avail this service per annum. The drug de-addiction unit in the department was started in the year 1976. It has outdoor & indoor facilities. All kind of substance use disorders are being treated in the unit. Apart from clinical services we are also part of various government programs like RTTC for Harm Reduction Program (Project Hifazat) under Global Fund Rd-9 IDU HIV Grant which ended the year 2016. OST Program for IDU funded and supported by NACO, UPSACS since May 2013 is still continuing. DTC has been established in the department of Psychiatry, KGMU, Lucknow in January 2016
